I completely agree with Avid Reader's review. I found the book to be very disappointing. The bdsm, what there was of it, was almost boring. As for the five-star reviews, I don't see how we even remotely read the same book! I have read several books by Claire Thompson and this is definitely my least favorite :-(Product details

Heart of Submission is the 5th book in the Erotic Awakenings series. Kate attends a BDSM conference to do research for a book she is writing. An opportunity to get some hands-on experience goes very wrong, and Chase is there to rescue Kate. While I’m a once-bitten, twice-shy kind of person, Kate finds her way to move past her bad experience and develop and explore a relationship with Chase. There are, of course, issues along the way, but they are able to work past them and come out on the other side to a HEA. Claire Thompson has provided yet another well-written look into a loving BDSM relationship.
Kate is looking to do some research for a book, and finds herself immersed in a world she knows nothing about. At the BDSM gathering she is meet with curious eyes, two who speak to her in different ways. Master John feels more demanding, where Master Chase feels more loving; which should she choose? Should she choose at all? Her roommate Stacey talks her into pursuing a scene, all in the name of the book she is writing at the request of her publisher. Kate embarks on her first lesson, trust your instincts! Will she get the knowledge needed to break through her writer’s block? Will she find much more than she bargained for?
I was completely blown away by this story! Kate longs to explore her submissive side. When she is told her next book will have BDSM elements in it, she relishes the opportunity to do some research. Her trust is betrayed, and at this point, I had to stop reading and take a breather. Ms Thompson described the events so well, I could feel the woman's fear (not the pain, though. Ouch!). The tale continues with Kate still yearning to explore this side of herself, and learning to trust with the help of Chase, a rope expert Dom. But Chase has his own healing to do. I loved reading about how two strong, yet vulnerable people share their journey together and come out the other side. Excellent, well-written story.
In her customary insightful language Ms Thompson juxtapositions the wrongs and the rights in the BDSM community in this story.
Playparties without proper supervision, hosts not checking up on newbies and when they are mistreated, not willing to follow up on the complaint. Fearing they would loose customers if they did.
How uncomfortably close to real life!
On the other hand you get the quiet, non-flashy Dom, who follows up on the traumatised, first time subs condition.
And takes her with lovingly slow steps into his dungeon, his arms, and into his heart, where she wanted and needs to be.
Much harder to find but also possible in real life.
This last book in the series is more thoughtful than the rest and completes the collection satisfyingly.
The Heart of Submission is a fast moving story about a young girl, Kate, who writes romance novels for a living and Chase, a BDSM practitioner. Kate is trying to write her first BDSM novel and has hit a stone wall. She decides that she needs more first hand experience so that she can create a good story. She goes to a conference where her first BDSM experience is not good. She is rescued by Chase.
What happens after her rescue from this scene is interwoven with characters that are well developed. I found myself routing for Chase and Kate and hoping that these two people would figure it out and end up together. Like all Claire's books, there is an HEA and I found that I was very satisfied with the outcome. The payoff was very quick. 218 pages moved very quickly.
With the completion of this novel, I am now at the end of the Erotic Awakenings series. I will have to search long and hard to find another BDSM series that is as fast moving and rewarding as this one. Claire, please keep writing these types of stories.
Wow - from the other 2 reviewers, I thought this was gonna be a 5. Wrong. It was really about a 2.5 or 3 and I feel disappointed. This was closer to a romance novel (not a very good one) than a BDSM romance novel. There were hardly any BDSM scenes and what few there were, left much to be desired. The only intense scene in the book destroyed and demolished any boundaries of safe, sane and consensual. The other part of the book I hated was the fact that the injured party and others who knew she was injured, did nothing to censure the offending party. I found this completely insane. Even the so-called "dominant" main character did nothing to help the injured party file a grievance and instead chose to ignore the situation except to listen to her. There were no dungeon monitors in the so-called play parties to provide a safety net. Also, the sex scenes were lackluster and left me bored.
There was also something wrong with the ebook in that every so often, in turning the page, parts of sentences were dropped from one page to the other and I had to change the font size many times in order to capture the full sentences. Also, the sepia tone did not work for parts of the book and were instead black and white in most parts - it was weird.
This is the first review I've ever given because I thought there should be one discordant opinion, I also rated this a "1" instead of a 2 or 3 because I did not want the averages to show this book was a "4" and others to get misled.
