A gripping serial killer thriller.

An entire family is murdered and, by a quirk, a young girl is left unharmed. For 15 years, she believed the killer had been caught, and he's now on death row, awaiting execution. While trying to be content with her adoptive family, she's living in relentless uncertainty and the fear of remembering what really happened that night when she was five years old. She's The Watson Girl.

A therapist has asked her to participate in regression session treatments to attempt to bring back those lost memories. The closer she gets to the truth, however, the less time she has to remain alive. Now, the real killer is going to silence her, before she can remember the details of that horrifying night, when she was an innocent witness.

Laura Watson is young, she's beautiful, and she's a serial killer's loose end.

Join the smart, relentless, and short-fused FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett and her team in a heart-stopping search for the serial killer who has managed to stay hidden for many years. Explore the inner workings of the murderer's mind, and find out what motivates such predatory, blood-lusting behavior, while following every twist and turn of an existence spent taking lives.

The Watson Girl (Audible Audio Edition) Leslie Wolfe Andrew Tell Books

Love, love, love me some Tess Winnett!!!! Her own tragic past, social quirks, and relentless pursuit of the bad guys just make you love her even more. Dawn Girl and The Watson Girl were terrific story telling and I really enjoyed both books. I already can't wait for the next book in the series! I'm hoping for just a hint of romance for Tess. Nothing major (because it's still about the her catching the bad guys) but maybe a little whisper of something between Tess and Gary. He's rather down-to-earth, like Catman, and Tess needs those kinds of people to help ground her and give her some "normal" in her crazy life. I like Bill, but as a profiler he sees too much and Tess needs someone who doesn't see all her secrets written on her face. I think Gary's the kind of guy she can take baby steps with. Gosh I really hope they end up together. I also liked how The Watson Girl let us see a different side of Pearson at the end. He's turning into a bit of a big brother/father figure looking out for Tess behind the scenes - would never have guessed that from the way he was with her before. All in all, I can't wait to see where the series goes!

The Watson Girl (Audible Audio Edition) Leslie Wolfe Andrew Tell Books Reviews

The Watson Girl by Leslie Wolfe, 244 pages, Italics Publishing, 2nd Edition, January 21st, 2017. Genre Crime/Serial Killers/Mystery and Suspense. Warning May Contain Spoilers.
The Watson Girl is a gripping serial killer thriller featuring an emotionally scarred, tough-as-nails female FBI agent, Tess Winnett. Agent Winnett has a perfect record. She always gets her man- though that usually means killing him in self-defense. After a harrowing near-death experience, Tess returns to the force early, despite her difficulties coping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Her first assignment is performing due diligence on the Watson file, a case they thought closed long ago. Fifteen years prior, the Watson family was murdered, with their four- year-old daughter Laura as the sole survivor. Laura is known as “The Watson Girl”.
Tess checks up on the claim of the alleged killer, “The Family Man”, that he didn’t kill three of the thirty-four families he was accused of murdering. After visiting him on death row, she double checks the case files, discovering several differences between the three crimes and the others The Family Man confessed to. With the aid of the local officers and MD who originally worked the cases, Tess puts together the pieces of the puzzle bit by bit. Meanwhile, Laura Watson appears on television talking about a new regression therapy she’s trying in hopes of regaining her repressed memories of the awful event. Tess races against the clock to identify and capture the killer before he can return to finish off “The Watson Girl”.
The style and plot structure is reminiscent of James Patterson’s books and had the mood of “Silence of the Lambs”. The well-woven story is told primarily in third person with occasional glimpses into the mind of the killer through first person internal narrative. I was particularly impressed with the portrayal of the killer himself. Wolfe portrays the malignant narcissistic psychopath to a tee. Tess naturally feels a connection to Laura, as they are both survivors of a horrible crime, both struggling with the anxiety and stress in their own ways. Laura’s survival is paramount to Tess in the scheme of things. If Laura can survive and thrive, so can Tess hope to overcome the inner scars of her ordeal.
Special Agent Tess Winnett also appears in Dawn Girl. Both stories can be read as stand-alone novels. Make time in your schedule to spend about four hours reading because you won’t want to put it down. The Watson Girl is disturbing and the reveal, horrifying; but if you love thrillers you won’t regret it one bit. I loved reading this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys crime novels, serial killer stories, police procedurals, and thrillers.
FBI Special Agent Tess Winnett, tough but psychologically troubled pursuer of the most evil of serial killers, made her literary debut in “Dawn Girl.” Now, she’s back in “The Watson Girl” with an even tougher problem, to stop a serial killer who has been overlooked by law enforcement and living in plain sight for years – and is very likely to kill again within days. Although Tess knows who the victim will be, she is prohibited from alerting the Watson girl to her peril. Tess has to marshal all her training, intellect, and instinct if she’s going to win this race against time.

This is a fast-paced thriller with a complex and fascinating lead character in Tess. But, the author didn’t limit her creative attention to only Tess. All of the secondary characters are well-developed with traits and quirks that make them interesting people, any one of which could have emerged as a main character as the plot moved forward. These character details are revealed with no slowing of the pace, and this richness supports masterful and believable dialog that keeps the burners on high.

The author also devotes considerable well-researched and fascinating attention to the villain. While most of the story is narrated in the third person, this is interspersed with periodic first-person narration by the mysterious psychopath, providing the reader with a chance to stare directly into the abyss. As the bad guy says at one point, “You see, I’m not like you; not in the slightest.” Somehow, the author manages to provide keen insight into the mind of a psychopath while simultaneously advancing our understanding of the story as a whole and the relationship among its various subplots.

It’s probably worth noting that both “Dawn Girl” and “The Watson Girl” stand entirely on their own. If you haven’t already read “Dawn Girl,” you’ve missed a really good read, but you can jump right into this one without a problem. Since this is the second novel in a nascent Tess Winnett collection, I assume we have a few more equally compelling novels to look forward to. I certainly hope so!
